What is different about a chain

A single pharmacy with a ringing phone has a staffing problem. A chain has a consistency problem on top of it: the same question gets a different answer depending on which store picks up, and nobody can see the pattern because the pattern is distributed across dozens of handsets.

The volume is also not evenly distributed. It concentrates in the stores least able to absorb it, at the hours when the pharmacist is dispensing, which is when the call is most likely to go unanswered and most likely to be an abandoned refill.

And the visibility is nil. Call volume, what people actually asked, which stores are drowning, how many callers hung up — that is central-operations data that is currently sitting in nobody’s system.
