An AI voice agent for pharmacy.

The OneDose Voice Agent answers inbound pharmacy calls. It picks up on the first ring, verifies who is calling, and handles the routine majority — refill status, collection times, opening hours, delivery questions — end to end. Anything clinical, ambiguous or low-confidence goes to a pharmacist with the call context attached.

It is a phone number, not an app. The patient does not download anything, log in, or learn a menu tree — they call the pharmacy the way they always have.

How does the Voice Agent actually work?

What follows is the mechanism — what the agent does, in what order, and where a human stays in the loop.

  • It answers immediately, every time

The queue is the problem being solved. An agent that picks up on the first ring at 9am Monday behaves identically at 6pm Friday, and there is no hold music because there is no hold.

  • It verifies before it discloses anything

The caller is identity-checked before the agent will say a word about a prescription. This is the part of an inbound pharmacy call that is genuinely regulated, and it is not a step the agent improvises.

  • It handles the routine call to completion

Is my prescription ready, when can I collect it, has it been delivered, are you open on Sunday — these do not need a pharmacist, and they are most of the queue. The agent closes them without a human touching the call.

  • It hands clinical questions to a pharmacist

Anything about interactions, dosing, side-effects or whether to keep taking something is routed to a pharmacist — with a transcript and a summary, so the pharmacist does not restart the conversation from zero.

  • It speaks the patient’s language

The agent conducts the call in the patient’s preferred language. Which languages are live depends on the deployment — worth asking us for your region rather than reading a list off a page.

What will the Voice Agent not do?

The limits matter more than the capabilities when the subject is medication, so they are stated plainly rather than left to be discovered in a pilot.

  • It does not counsel patients. Clinical questions go to a pharmacist, every time, without exception.
  • It does not guess when it is unsure. Low confidence is an escalation trigger, not a reason to improvise an answer.
  • It does not pretend to be human. The agent identifies itself as an AI agent at the start of the call.
  • It does not silently drop a call it cannot handle. Escalation means a human, with context — not a dial tone.

How does this agent fit with the others?

The Voice Agent is one of six OneDose agents that share one patient context and one audit log. That shared context is the difference between a workforce and six tools: the voice agent already knows what the follow-up agent asked yesterday, so the patient is not asked to repeat themselves and the care team reads one history rather than six.

Frequently asked

What is an AI voice agent for a pharmacy?
An AI voice agent for a pharmacy is software that answers inbound patient calls in natural speech. It verifies the caller, resolves routine questions — refill status, collection times, opening hours, deliveries — without a human, and routes clinical questions and anything it is unsure about to a pharmacist.
Will the AI voice agent answer clinical questions?
No. Questions about dosing, interactions, side-effects or whether to continue a medication are routed to a pharmacist with the call context attached. The agent handles the operational call and hands over the clinical one — that boundary is a design constraint, not a setting.
Does the patient know they are talking to an AI?
Yes. The agent identifies itself as an AI agent at the start of the call. Passing an AI agent off as a human is a trust problem and, in a growing number of jurisdictions, a legal one.
What happens when the voice agent cannot handle a call?
It transfers to a human with the transcript and a summary attached, so the pharmacist starts the conversation already knowing who is calling and what they asked. A call the agent cannot resolve is never dropped or left in a loop.
Is an AI voice agent HIPAA compliant?
A voice agent handling prescription information processes protected health information, so under HIPAA it needs a Business Associate Agreement with the vendor, encryption in transit and at rest, identity verification before disclosure, access controls, and an audit trail. Compliance is a property of the deployment, not a badge on the software — see the OneDose security and compliance pages for our posture.
